PROSTHETICS/ORTHOTICS

2
Our team of highly trained Prosthetists/Orthotists are responsible for the evaluation, casting, measurement, and fitting of artificial limbs. Each prosthesis is custom fabricated on site in order to ensure optimal fit and function. We treat all limb deficiencies and provide durable, comfortable, functional prostheses. They evaluate and treat a wide variety of patients with a multitude of diagnoses, including congenital disorders, acute trauma and chronic disability. To date, the youngest person provided with an orthotic device was 10 days old and the oldest was 85 years old. Treatment occurs in both an outpatient and an inpatient setting, which allows the orthotic team members to work closely with the surgical department and physical therapy department in order to best coordinate patient care. MEDICAL
The medical team of PRH is a collaborative team consisting of physicians, mid-level practitioners ( PA's and NP's), and nurses. Our role is to assess, diagnose, and treat the various acute and chronic illnesses our patients present with. Examples of frequently seen pathology include a myriad of infections, hypertension, diabetes, wound care, fractures, lacerations, and acute injuries. We are capable of providing much needed medications to both prevent and treat conditions that would otherwise be left untreated, potentially decreasing early death. When a surgical case presents to our clinic, we refer to outside sources within the community, often to surgical mission teams that also come to Port-de-Paix. Our presence within the community is often the only medical services our patients have ever had. We have informative classes after clinic to teach patients in areas such as wound care, STD's, and general health care in the attempt to prevent diseases from occurring. The interest is great and classes are well received.
The addition of general medicine to PRH's long-term goal in improving the lives of people in and around Port-de-Paix is invaluable. If you are interested in being a part of the medical team, please contact us at bswish26@yahoo.com

PHYSICAL/OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
Our physical and occupational therapists are highly trained and dedicated volunteers capable of evaluating and treating musculoskeletal injuries of all types. Our treatment focuses on patient evaluation and manual treatment of soft tissue and joint injuries/restrictions. Patient education and self-management of conditions are strongly emphasized to allow patients participate in their own recovery. Our highly skilled therapists excel in training amputees for the challenging environments they will encounter with their new prosthesis.
